Senior Dog Care

October 1, 2017

Is your dog’s fur going grey around the muzzle? Is Fido starting to slow down? It can come as a bit of a shock to realize that your canine companion is reaching his golden years. However, you may find that you really enjoy this special time in your pet’s life. Instead of chasing squirrels and eating couch cushions, your furry friend may be perfectly content to doze off at your feet. Here, a Salem, VA vet discusses caring for an older dog.

Bed

One of the best things you can do to keep your furry buddy comfortable is to invest in a good doggy bed. We recommend orthopedic beds, as they offer extra support.

Food

Proper nutrition will go a long way towards keeping your pooch in good health as he ages. Offer Fido high quality, nourishing food. Treats are fine, but don’t let Fido convince you to overfeed him. You don’t want your pooch becoming overweight! Obesity can cause or contribute to a whole slew of health issues, such as heart disease and arthritis. Ask your vet for specific advice. While we’re on the topic of obesity and its health implications, it’s worth noting that cats can also suffer from similar issues. Learn more about ‘Obesity In Cats’ and how to prevent it.

Veterinary Care

As Fido ages, he may need to come in more often. Regular exams greatly increase the chances of any issues being caught early, which can be very helpful. At home, watch for any potential signs of illness, and contact your vet immediately if you notice anything amiss.

Exercise

While Fido may no longer be up for vigorous walks or long games of fetch, he’ll still need some activity. Most dogs require at least a daily walk. Just keep an eye on your pooch, and take him in when he starts looking tired. You may find that you really love these relaxing strolls with your furry best friend!
