Senior Cat Care

March 15, 2018

Is your kitty aged six or older? If so, your furball may technically be considered a senior . . . even if she still thinks of herself as a kitten. As Fluffy gets older, her needs will change a little, so you’ll want to offer her lots of TLC. Read on as a Salem, VA vet discusses caring for an aging cat.

Food

As your pet ages, she’ll become less active, which will make it easier for her to gain weight. Follow your vet’s recommendations for feeding Fluffy, including advice on serving sizes, suitable treats, supplements, and changing over to a senior-formula pet food. While ensuring Fluffy gets nutritionally balanced meals, don’t forget Fido during the holiday season. Explore our ‘Holiday Cookies for Fido’ article for some safe and tasty treat ideas.

Beds

Senior cats are napping experts, capable of sleeping up to 20 hours a day. Make sure Fluffy has lots of comfy beds and napping spots!

Cuddles

Make sure your furry pal feels loved and safe by paying lots of attention to her. Just be very gentle when picking your cat up or putting her down.

Grooming

Fluffy may have a hard time reaching her whole body to groom herself. Help her out by gently brushing her.

Kitty Facilities

Keep your feline pal’s comfort in mind. Nightlights will help Fluffy get around more easily at night. Your furball may also prefer a litterbox with low walls. Pet ramps or stairs are also helpful, as they will make it easier for your kitty to reach her favorite perches and napping spots.

Veterinary Care

Your vet may recommend that Fluffy come in a bit more often as she ages. Regular exams are very important, as they increase the chances of any medical issues being caught—and therefore treated—early. At home, keep a close eye out for signs of sickness, such as hiding, poor grooming, vomiting, or diarrhea. Call your vet right away if you notice anything unusual about your pet’s appearance, behavior, or vocalizations. For concerns beyond routine care, such as allergies or skin conditions that may affect your senior cat, discover how our ‘Allergies & Dermatology’ services can provide the targeted care Fluffy needs.

Playtime

Playing with your kitty regularly is one of the best things you can do for her. Even if Fluffy only lasts a few minutes, pouncing and jumping are great for her physically. Those fun play sessions also offer your feline friend beneficial mental stimulation, which is great for her mind. This can help ward off the cognitive decline some of our furry pals experience in their golden years.
