Summer Care for Dogs

June 15, 2018

Summer is (almost) officially here! As the temperatures rise, you may need to make some changes to your canine buddy’s care regimen. Hot weather can be pretty tough on Fido! Read on as a Salem, VA vet discusses summer doggy care.

Basics

Fido should always have plenty of fresh, clean water. If your furry pal tends to drain his bowl in one gulp, he may need a bigger one. You may also want to get him a doggy fountain. Also, if your pup has an outdoor area to chase squirrels around in, make sure he has plenty of shade. Finally, never, ever leave your dog in an unattended vehicle. This can be a deadly mistake!

Paw Care

If you’ve ever stepped barefoot onto hot sand or tar, you know how painful it can be. This is also true for dogs. Fido can burn his paws walking or running on hot or harsh surfaces, so keep him on soft surfaces as much as you can. Your pet’s furry feet are extra delicate when they are wet, so be really careful after he has been swimming. You can also use paw balm or wax to protect his paws.

Swimming

Some of our canine pals love the water. If Fido likes swimming, treat him to the occasional dip. Just be sure to put safety first. Avoid beaches with strong currents or riptides. Also, never leave your furry buddy unattended near water.

Exercise

When temperatures soar, try to limit Fido’s outdoor time during the hottest parts of the day. Save those walks and play sessions for morning and evening, when it’s cooler. Also, take care not to overexert your dog on hot days.

Grooming

Some dogs are more comfortable with a summer haircut. However, this advice definitely does not apply to all pooches. If your canine friend has a thick coat, like a husky, his fur will actually insulate him from the heat, so you don’t want to cut it. Ask your vet for specific recommendations.

Keeping Fido Cool

There are some pretty cute and fun ways to help your canine companion beat the heat. Treat your pup to some doggy ice cream, or get him a kiddie pool to splash around in. Fido may also appreciate a hammock bed.
