Dog Party Day

June 15, 2019

Dog owners, put a paw print on your calendar for June 21st: it’s Dog Party Day! Although Fido loves and adores his human ‘pack,’ he does also benefit from spending time with other pooches. Why not throw him a party? A local Roanoke, VA vet offers tips on creating a pup-tastic event that both people and dogs will love.

Food

Get plenty of treats to help keep those cute tails wagging. If you like, you can make homemade ones. Pupsicles are bound to be a hit. Put pieces of kibble, dog biscuit, shredded meat, and/or chew sticks in wax paper cups or ice cube trays, pour sodium-free broth over them, and freeze. You can find more recipes online. Just stick to pet-safe foods. Some things to avoid are garlic, onions, scallions, and chives; pitted fruits; grapes, currants, and raisins; meat on the bone; alcohol; caffeine; chocolate; and anything containing xylitol. Of course, you don’t want to ignore your human guests. This is a great time for a potluck or barbeque!

Toys

Set out lots of toys for Fido and his friends. Make sure there is more than enough to go around, as dogs can get territorial about playthings. You don’t want your furry guests fighting over tennis balls or rope toys! To save money, look online for DIY options.

Invitation List

Only invite friendly, well-behaved dogs. Also, make sure that both Fido and his four-legged buddies are current on their vaccinations and parasite control. Better safe than sorry!

Entertainment

Want to turn your yard into a doggy amusement park for a day? Get a few kiddie pools, and fill them with water for your furry friends to splash around in. You can also set out a sprinkler. You may want to add some simple outdoor toys, like a tug toy.

Safety

Do some puppyproofing before the big day. Remove or secure toxic plants; plastic bags and wrappers; chemicals; medications; wires and cords; and anything small or sharp. We also recommend getting a self-latching gate for the yard.

Strike A Pose

This is a great time to get some really cute pics of your canine pal with all his buddies. Try downloading a pet photo app. These have settings that are great for taking pet photos.

Our Advice on Dog Party Day

What is Dog Party Day, and when is it celebrated?

Dog Party Day is a fun, informal holiday celebrated on June 21st, dedicated to celebrating our canine friends. It’s a day for dog owners to throw parties for their pets, allowing dogs to socialize and enjoy themselves with other pups. These gatherings often include dog-friendly treats, toys, and activities, creating a festive atmosphere for dogs and their human companions. It’s an excellent opportunity to appreciate the joy and companionship dogs bring into our lives and to strengthen the bond between pets and their owners.

What ingredients should be avoided in homemade dog treats?

In homemade dog treats, avoid ingredients harmful to dogs such as garlic, onions, scallions, and chives; pitted fruits; grapes, currants, and raisins; meat on the bone; alcohol; caffeine; chocolate; and anything containing xylitol. Also, steer clear of excessive salt, sugar, and fat. It’s essential to use only dog-safe ingredients and consult your vet, especially if your dog has specific dietary restrictions or allergies. This ensures the treats are both enjoyable and safe for your furry friend.

What toys suit a dog party, and how can you avoid territorial issues?

For a dog party, choose a variety of toys to cater to different play styles, like tennis balls, rope toys, and squeaky toys. Ensure there are plenty of toys to prevent territorial behavior. It’s a good idea to have multiple popular toys to avoid conflicts. Spread the toys in the play area to encourage dogs to engage with different items and reduce crowding in one spot. Monitoring play and intervening if play becomes too rough or competitive can also help maintain a peaceful, fun environment for all the canine guests.

What criteria should be considered when making an invitation list for a dog party?

Consider each dog’s temperament when making an invitation list for a dog party. Only invite friendly, social, and well-behaved dogs around other dogs and people. Ensure all invited dogs are current on vaccinations and parasite control for everyone’s health and safety. It’s also wise to be aware of specific behavioral issues or triggers, like food aggression, to plan accordingly. Knowing the dogs’ sizes and play styles can help organize a harmonious group, reducing the risk of conflicts during the party.

What safety precautions should be taken when hosting a dog party?

When hosting a dog party, prioritize safety by puppy-proofing the area. Remove or secure toxic plants, chemicals, small/sharp objects, and secure trash cans. Ensure the space is enclosed with a self-latching gate to prevent escapes. Provide shade and water to avoid overheating. Keep a close eye on dog interactions and be ready to intervene if play becomes too rough. Avoid toys that could be choking hazards. Ensure all dogs are vaccinated and healthy to attend. Lastly, have a first-aid kit on hand for any minor injuries.
