Tips for Playing With Your Dog

January 15, 2020

Does your dog sometimes run up to you holding his favorite toy? According to the doggy rulebook, this is the proper way for Fido to officially request playtime. Indulge these super-cute requests! Playing isn’t just fun for our canine pals, it’s also really good for them. Even just a few minutes of playing Fetch or tugging at a rope toy will benefit Fido both mentally and physically. Here, a Roanoke, VA vet offers tips on playing with your pup.

Make It Routine

Dogs really do best when they are on a set schedule. If possible, play with Fido at the same time each day.

Choose Appropriate Playthings

Doggy toys are definitely not one-size-fits all. Choose things that are appropriate for Fido’s age. For example, puppies often love chew toys, while older dogs may prefer something that’s softer and more brightly colored. Size is another thing to consider. Your furry pal could seriously hurt himself playing with something that is too big or too small for him!

Keep It Fresh

Variety is the spice of life! Change Fido’s toys out regularly, so he doesn’t get bored with them.

Consult Your Vet

Not all activities are right for every dog. Some pooches should never be encouraged to jump or stand on their back legs. This is typically a concern with large breeds, such as German Shepherds, as it can contribute to or exacerbate hip dysplasia. Other dogs, like brachycephalic pups, shouldn’t be encouraged to run or jump, as they get winded so easily. Ask your vet for specific recommendations.

Don’t Encourage Rough Play

Many of our canine companions love playing Tug O’ War with rope toys. However, this isn’t going to be the best option for every pooch. If Fido has any aggressive tendencies, you’ll probably want to skip this one. Sometimes dogs get a bit too possessive about their toys, which can cause them to act up.

Have Fun

Enjoy this special time with your furry best friend! You may find that doggy playtime is a great way for you to relax and unwind. Plus, we suspect that watching your canine buddy’s adorable antics will put a smile on your face as well. There’s nothing more adorable than a dog hard at play!
