Having Multiple Cats

April 15, 2020

Do you have more than one kitty? It’s good for our feline friends to have buddies and playmates that speak their language. However, cats aren’t always thrilled to find themselves with a new furry roommate. A Roanoke, VA vet offers some tips for people with multiple cats below.

Introductions

First impressions are a very big deal to kitties. When you bring your new cat home, keep her in a separate room for the first few days. Let your pets sniff each other and play ‘paws under the door’ before they meet face-to-face.

Provide Plenty Of Everything

Cats tend to get territorial over things like food, toys, and lap space. Make sure that your furballs don’t need to compete for these resources! This also applies to litterbox. You should have at least one box per kitty, plus at least one extra.

Offer A Variety

Cats all have their own unique tastes for things like toys and treats. Fluffy may love tuna and catnip, while Muffins may enjoy chicken and crinkle toys. Get a variety of kitty things, and see what your pets prefer.

Soothe Squabbles

Never punish your cats for fighting: this will only make them resent each other more. You should be able to break up most squabbles by clapping your hands, stamping your feet, or making a loud noise. If your pets are really going after each other aggressively, ask your vet for advice.

Pawsitive Thoughts

You want your pets to form good associations with each other. Give your furry friends treats and catnip together, and play with them at the same time.

Don’t Play Favorites

Be sure to pay equal attention to both of your feline pals. This is extra important when you’ve just added a kitty. If your resident cat feels ignored, she’ll become quite resentful!

Veterinary Care

Proper veterinary care is a must! Keep your furballs on the same schedule for vaccinations and parasite control. Otherwise, fleas may jump off one kitty and hop right onto the other.

Enjoy The Cute

It may take time, but most cats learn to at least tolerate one another. Sooner or later, you may find your feline buddies playing together, engaging in synchronized napping, or even snuggling with each other. Savor these adorable milestones!
