Great Ways to Celebrate DOGust

August 1, 2020

Today, August 1 st, is a special day for Man’s Best Friend. It’s DOGust, the unofficial shelter dog birthday. Many of our canine patients were adopted from shelters. Of course, when you get Fido from a shelter, you won’t know exactly when he was born. That’s why many people are celebrating their pets’ birthdays today. A Roanoke, VA vet offers some tips on how to do that below.

Treats

Fido probably won’t be particularly impressed if you tell him it’s his (unofficial) birthday. However, he’ll definitely perk up if you get him a cake! Of course, you don’t want to give your pet a regular cake. You’ll find lots of recipes for things you can make your four-legged buddy online. Just stick to ones that use pet-safe ingredients.

Photos

We never get tired of seeing cute photos of our patients. Snap some quality photos of Fido! While candid shots are great, you can also set up an official shoot. Try experimenting with different settings, angles, and backgrounds.

Toys

It’s hard not to smile when seeing a playful pup frolicking with his favorite toy. Buy or make Fido some new playthings. Then, indulge him with a long play session. This will get that cute tail going and put a smile on your face!

Volunteer

We always love to see our canine pals spoiled a bit. (We prefer it when Fido gets pampered with toys and belly rubs, rather than too much bacon, but that’s another topic.) Unfortunately, there are many dogs in shelters hoping that someone will adopt them. Volunteering and/or fostering is a great way to help these sweet pooches.

Adopt

What’s the absolute best way to celebrate DOGust? Adopt! Of course, this isn’t something to take lightly. When you adopt a dog, you’re signing on for years of care and responsibility. That said, if you’ve been considering getting a canine companion, and your household, schedule, and budget will allow it, go for it!

Quality Time

Dogs offer us unconditional love and friendship, and they really don’t ask for much in return. In fact, Fido really just wants to spend time with you! Indulge your furry buddy’s adorable requests for belly rubs and ear scritches, and take him for a long walk. Time spent with dogs is always well used!
