5 Things to Teach Your Puppy

August 15, 2020

Have you recently adopted a puppy? Congratulations! It’s always fun and exciting to welcome a new pet into your household. We probably don’t have to tell you that you’ll experience some utterly adorable moments in the next few months. However, being a puppy parent isn’t all tail wags and doggy kisses. Little Fido has a lot of learning to do, and it’s up to you to teach him! Here, a Roanoke, VA vet lists some things to teach your canine buddy.

Basic Obedience

All dogs should obey basic commands, like Sit, Stay, Heel, Come, and Lay Down. We recommend starting with Sit, as it’s easiest to learn. Work on one thing at a time, and don’t move on until your furry friend has mastered each command. Incorporate lots of praise, ear scritches, and, of course, treats, to make learning fun.

Housetraining

No surprises here: you want to get little Fido started on housetraining right away. The main thing is to walk your pooch often, and reward him for doing his business outdoors. Ask your vet for specific advice.

Grooming Will Happen

Bath time many never be your furry friend’s favorite thing. However, he definitely needs to understand that it’s part of his regular doggy schedule. Ask your vet for advice on your pup’s exact grooming needs, and start him on that schedule immediately. Don’t wait until Fido is fully grown to brush his teeth or clip his claws, either!

Crate Training

Even if you don’t plan to crate Fido often, it’s important for him to be comfortable being kenneled. After all, he will eventually be crated, either when traveling or when visiting his vet or groomer. Pick a crate that will fit your canine pal’s estimated adult size, and make it cozy and inviting by adding comfy bedding and fun toys.

Cats Are Weird

Kitties can be quite confusing to Fido. After all, Fluffy uses a litterbox, cleans herself willingly, and wags her tail when she’s angry. None of this makes any sense to Man’s Best Friend! Introduce your furry pals slowly, and supervise all interactions. It’s important to help your pets bond now. If you see any signs of aggression in your dog, consult your vet.
