Signs of Pain in Dogs

September 1, 2020

September is Animal Pain Awareness Month. This is definitely one topic that we want to help shed light on. Our canine companions can’t tell us when they aren’t feeling well. In fact, some try to mask signs of illness or injury, making it even harder to spot red flags. We’re here to help! Read on as a local Roanoke, VA vet lists some warning signs that Fido isn’t feeling well.

Limping

Limping is one of the more obvious signs to look for. In some cases, this may be caused by an injury. However, it can also be caused by other issues, such as arthritis.

Lack of Appetite

This one is definitely a red flag with our canine pals. Fido has a very healthy appetite, and will usually eat, well, just about anything. (That can also get him into trouble, but that’s another topic.) If your dog is not interested in his dinner, he may very well be sick!

Tummy Trouble

It’s not uncommon for dogs to have the occasional upset stomach. However, if your pooch frequently has issues with vomiting or diarrhea, have your vet check him out.

Licking/Nibbling

Dogs often lick or nibble at sore spots. It’s not unusual for pups with arthritis to bite at a sore leg, for example. If your canine buddy is constantly worrying at one area, he may be responding to pain.

Withdrawal

Man’s Best Friend is quite sociable, and is usually happiest when he’s with his humans. If your furry best friend seems to be off moping by himself, or just isn’t as interactive as usual, there could be something going on with him.

Whimpering

Fido may very well whine when he wants to go for a walk, or if the cat stole his bed again. However, if you’re not sure why your pooch is speaking up, or if he’s vocalizing differently than he usually does, there may be something wrong.

Reduced Interest In Play

It’s normal for dogs to slow down as they age, and become more interested in napping than chasing squirrels. However, this should be a gradual change that takes place over years. If your four-legged pal’s favorite doggy toys are suddenly gathering dust, pain may be the reason.
