Playing With a Senior Cat

October 15, 2020

Is your kitty aged nine or older? If so, you have a furry little senior on your hands. One thing that will be very beneficial to your pet as she ages is playtime. Playing keeps cats strong physically, and also offers them beneficial mental stimulation. Read on as a local Roanoke, VA vet offers tips on playing with Fluffy.

Make It Routine

Our feline pals are definitely creatures of habit. Fluffy will stick to the same basic routine for her 32 daily naps, 6 meals, and 3 grooming sessions. Try to play with your kitty at the same time every day. After dinner is a good time. That way, when you’re done, your furball will likely curl up in your lap and relax with you as you’re winding down.

Let Kitty Win

Cats take their hunts very seriously, even if their prey is just a bottlecap or dust bunny. Be sure to let your feline friend ‘capture’ her victims sometimes. You get bonus points if Fluffy gets that adorable smug look kitties get when they’re proud of themselves!

Use Senior-Friendly Toys

Your furry little buddy may have a hard time spotting a catnip mouse that is the same color as the carpet. Try toys that squeak or light up. These will be easier for her to track.

Pick A Safe Place

When playing with an older cat, choose a soft surface. A room with a soft carpet is great. Fluffy will get good traction, and you won’t have to worry about her falling. Don’t play near stairs, fireplaces, or other hazards.

Don’t Worry About Overdoing It

You have to be careful not to overexert dogs. Our canine buddies will exhaust themselves to please their humans. Cats? Not so much. Fluffy isn’t really at risk of exhaustion here. The minute she feels the least bit tired, she’ll quit the game and go take yet another nap.

Expect Cuddles

Kitties get very attached to their humans, and they really do appreciate the love and care we give them. Fluffy will know you’re holding that laser pointer just so she can continue her quest to catch that mysterious red dot. Don’t be surprised if she jumps onto your lap for cuddles after playtime is over! For more comprehensive insights on caring for your aging feline companion, delve into our ‘Senior Cat Care’ article.
