Surprising Holiday Hazards for Dogs

December 15, 2020

The holidays are officially here! Our furry friends are never cuter than they are at this time of year. Of course, you’ll need to keep a close eye on Fido. Man’s Best Friend certainly has a knack for mischief, and that is never more apparent than around the holidays. A Roanoke, VA vet lists some surprising dangers for dogs below.

Trees

Trees look harmless—and, of course, very pretty—but they’re actually quite dangerous to our canine pals. The water bowl is one concern. Many Christmas trees have been treated with chemicals, such as fire retardant and fertilizer, which can then leach into the water. Fido could also choke or hurt himself if he tries to eat or play with the lights, tinsel, ornaments, or ribbons. If your pooch won’t leave the tree alone, use a puppy gate to block it off.

Plants

Many of those traditional holiday plants are toxic to dogs. Holly, ivy, poinsettias, yew, and mistletoe are all poisonous to pups. Unfortunately, this won’t necessarily keep Fido from trying to eat them. Keep plants in spots your canine companion can’t reach!

Treats

Dogs somehow manage to be super cute when someone is enjoying a special snack. However, not everything we eat is safe for them. You may be familiar with some dangerous foods, such as garlic and onions, chocolate, and alcohol. What many don’t realize is that anything high in fat is also unsafe. Organ meats, such as liver and kidney, are also dangerous if fed too often. Do plenty of research, and ask your vet for more information.

Bones

We know, that image of dogs happily gnawing on bones is both familiar and iconic. It’s also very misleading. Bones get very brittle when they have been cooked, and can easily break into sharp pieces that can choke or strangle your furry pal. Only give your canine buddy boneless meat, without the skin or fat.

Stress

Our furry pals are all unique, just like people are. However, most pups are very much creatures of habit. Fido can easily get uneasy when there are changes to his daily doggy routines. Guests, decorations, traveling, and just the general commotion of all that hustle and bustle can really stress dogs out. Pay extra attention to your pet, and keep that cute tail going.
