8 Things to Consider Before Adopting a Second Dog

January 15, 2021

Have you been thinking about getting a second dog? There are definite benefits to having two pooches. Many of our canine pals love having a buddy to play with! However, there are some things to consider. Read on as a local Roanoke, VA vet lists a few things to think about before signing those adoption papers.

Compatibility

This is a big one, and it’s not always easy to figure out in advance. Two ‘alpha’ dogs may very well fight, which is the last thing you want. Consider the age, size, breed, history, and temperaments of both dogs. We also strongly recommend doing a meet and greet before committing. Ask your vet for specific advice.

Expenses

Twice the dog means twice the fun, twice the tail wags, and twice the cuteness. However, it also means twice the food, twice the toys, and twice the veterinary bills. Make sure your budget has room for Spot!

Noise

One barking dog is enough, in and of itself, to prompt angry calls from neighbors. Two could mean a lot more friction. If you live in a place with noise ordinances, this could lead to legal hassles.

Your Reasons

Make sure that you are adopting for the right reasons. If you think that a new dog will fix a relationship issue or help your current dog cope with anxiety better, you could end up making matters worse.

Travel

Traveling with one dog can be tricky. With two, it can become quite difficult. If you put your pup in a kennel when you go away, you’ll have the expense of boarding two pooches.

Room

A second dog will take up more room. While your pups can share some toys, they’ll need their own beds and dishes. And if you let Fido hang out on the couch with you, make sure there’s room for Spot, too.

Time

Every dog is unique, and they all have their own specific care needs. Do you have time to put in for training, playing with, and caring for two pups?

Commitment

Last but certainly not least, just make sure that you are ready, willing, and able to commit to your new canine buddy. Adoption is forever!
