Leaving Your Cat Home Alone

July 15, 2022

Does your feline buddy stay home alone while you go off to earn money for catnip and kitty litter? Cats are very independent, and they can do quite well by themselves. However, you will need to take a few steps to keep your furball happy, healthy, and safe while you’re out. A Roanoke, VA vet offers some advice on this below.

Toys

Playing is, of course, Fluffy’s number one form of entertainment. Kitties all have their own tastes, so give your cute pet a variety, and see what she likes best. Just don’t leave any string toys out. You don’t want your furry pal getting all tangled up in that feather toy!

Petproofing

Our feline pals are renowned for their capability to get into mischief. Never underestimate Fluffy’s penchant for shenanigans! Remove or store anything that could choke, entangle, or poison her. This includes things like small or sharp objects, plastic bags and wrappers, ropes and cords, medicine, and chemicals.

Climate Control

Kitties’ fur coats help keep them insulated, but that pretty fur isn’t enough to protect your pet from extreme hot or cold. Fluffy should always have access to rooms or areas with climate control.

Comforts

Small touches can make Fluffy’s alone time much more comfortable. If you won’t be home before dark, leave a light on for her. Your furry friend will also appreciate some background music. Leave a TV or radio on playing softly. (For extra purrs, queue up some documentaries made just for cats.)

Entertainment

Kitties are always safer staying indoors, but they do need entertainment and stimulation. Birdwatching is always popular with our feline friends. Make sure that Fluffy has a safe, comfy window seat. Your cat may spend hours looking out the window and daydreaming about hunting!

Long Absences

Cats are much more suited to staying home alone than dogs are. Fluffy doesn’t need to be walked, and she will groom herself. Most kitties are fine staying home while their humans are working, or even overnight. However, some kitties really shouldn’t be left by themselves for very long. If Fluffy is a senior or a kitten, or has medical issues, you may want to board her, or have someone stop over to check on her if you are going away overnight.
