Reasons To Adopt A Senior Cat

February 15, 2023

Are you considering bringing a new kitty into your life? Kittens are absolutely adorable, of course, but senior felines also have plenty of charms. A Roanoke, VA vet lists some reasons to adopt an older furball in this article.

They’re Calmer

There are few things more adorable than baby cats. There are also few things more mischievous than baby cats. Little Fluffy needs a lot of love and parenting in that first year. She’ll get into absolutely everything, and may have a penchant for climbing your leg or pouncing on your toes. Senior cats, on the other paw, have outgrown their zoomies. For the most part, kitties in their golden years will spend their time napping, with occasional breaks for meals, cuddles, and litterbox runs. While kittens demand a lot of energy and attention, understanding their needs is crucial. For insights into raising a healthy, happy kitten, explore our ‘Kitten Care Tips‘.

Prior Experience

Senior kitties have been around the block—or living room—a few times. Fluffy will likely already know the do’s and don’ts of being a good cat. Plus, she’s likely already fixed.

No Surprises

When you get a kitten, it’s hard to know exactly what Fluffy will look like when she’s all grown up, or what her purrsonality will be. With older cats, there really are no surprises. A shy cat, of course, may warm up in time, but for the most part, what you see is what you get.

They Need Help

Older cats have a very hard time getting adopted: it’s just too difficult for them to compete with kittens. This is very sad, as many of them get quite depressed being stuck in shelters for weeks or even months. Unfortunately, since not all shelters are no-kill, Fluffy may also have a limited time to find a loving forever home. Helping an animal that really needs it is a wonderful feeling, and is definitely something you can feel great about.

They’re Adorable

Older cats are really charming in their own way. They’re often super affectionate, and just want to cuddle. It’s also fun seeing Fluffy get the zoomies. Even senior felines like to let their inner kittens out sometimes!

Love And Purrs

Cats know when someone has helped them, and tend to show their gratitude very clearly. Don’t be surprised if your feline pal immediately decides that you’re the bee’s knees. Senior cat purrs are truly precious!
