6 Ways to Keep Your Dog Safe

October 1, 2020

October is National Animal Safety and Protection Month. Our canine pals can be very curious, and they definitely have a knack for mischief. Part of being a good dog owner is keeping Fido safe. A Roanoke, VA vet offers some tips on dog safety below. For more in-depth guidance on fulfilling your duties as a pet parent, explore our comprehensive article on ‘Responsible Dog Ownership’.

Training

Training is absolutely crucial for safety reasons. Make sure your pooch knows simple commands, like Sit, Stay, Come, Heel, and Lay Down. If Fido doesn’t obey these commands, take him back to school!

Petproofing

Make sure that your home is safe for your canine buddy. You’ll want to remove or secure anything Fido shouldn’t eat or play with. Toxic plants are one concern. Things like sago palms, day lilies, daffodils, and morning glories are poisonous to your cute pet. Other hazards include plastic bags, wrappers, and ties; rope and cords; chemicals; medicine; and anything small or sharp.

Veterinary Care

Keep up with Fido’s doctor’s appointments. Parasite prevention products and vaccinations will protect your pooch from dangerous parasites and diseases, while exams can reveal medical issues, sometimes even before symptoms appear. Leashes

Make sure you always have Fido leashed when you take him off your property. Even the most well-behaved dog can bolt if they get scared or spot a squirrel. Keep a good grip on your canine friend’s leash. Retractable leashes can be great in some situations, but they are dangerous in others. The mechanisms can jam sometimes, which can be a problem. Don’t use these on sidewalks, or in areas where your pet may encounter another pup.

Walking Safety

When walking your pup, stick to safe paths, and steer Fido away from things like broken glass or steep banks. Also, walk towards oncoming traffic, and keep him to the outside.

Food Options

Man’s Best Friend has a very healthy appetite. Actually, Fido will snap up pretty much anything he can reach. Many of our favorite foods are toxic to pets! Don’t let your furry friend eat anything that contains garlic, onions, scallions, or chives; grapes, currants, or raisins; alcohol; nuts; mushrooms; caffeine; chocolate; or xylitol. Pitted fruits are also on the no-no list, along with raw dough and yeast, meat on the bone, and anything that contains a lot of salt, sugar, or fat.
