Cattitude

February 1, 2020

Kitties are very interesting—and perplexing—little furballs. Fluffy is quite small, but she has a big personality. Some of our feline friends are super cuddly and lovable. Others? Not so much. Here, a Salem, VA vet discusses cattitude.

To Pet or Not To Pet?

One thing that definitely rubs Fluffy the wrong way is, well, being rubbed the wrong way. Cats have some very strict rules about how we are allowed to pet them, and for how long. It’s worth noting that Fluffy reserves the right to change her mind about being petted at any given time, and with no warning. If your furball will only tolerate being petted for a few moments, abide by her wishes. Never force attention on a cat! Let your feline pal choose when, where, and how she wants to be petted.

Kitty Anxiety

Sometimes cats are grumpy because they are nervous or upset. Changes are often very upsetting to kitties. Going to a new household, moving, the loss or addition of another pet, and/or other major changes can all be hard on our furry pals. Make sure Fluffy always has a safe place to retreat to if she feels scared, and pay extra attention to her when things change at home.

Health Issues

Just like people, cats can get pretty grouchy if they don’t feel well. If you aren’t quite sure why Fluffy is being grumpy, have your vet examine her. If your feline buddy gets the all-clear, then at least you know you have a cranky pet, not a sick one.

Meow

Kitties are small, but they aren’t shy about expressing their opinions. Fluffy may give a little meow of protest if you move her mid-nap. If your furball is grumpy, she may put a little attitude in her meow, or even hiss or growl. That’s a clear warning to leave your pet alone!

Rough Play

Playing with cats can get a bit confusing. Fluffy may be rolling around, having the time of her life, only to suddenly bite and scratch you. Try teaching your furball better petiquette. If your cat tries to attack you, tell her ‘No’ in a disapproving voice. Then, walk away and ignore her until she’s ready to play nice. She’ll get the hint eventually!
