Thanksgiving With Fluffy

November 15, 2018

Thanksgiving is just around the corner. Kitties are definitely something for us to be thankful for. They keep us smiling, offer unconditional love, and are a source of cuddles and comfort in hard times. Just be sure to keep Fluffy’s comfort and safety in mind as the holiday approaches. A Salem, VA discusses Thanksgiving with cats in this article.

Food

Your furball can definitely enjoy a special holiday feast. Canned tuna or chicken in water is a great treat for cats! Your kitty can also have some of that delicious turkey. Just be sure to only give your pet plain, cooked meat, without the skin, bones, or fat. Fluffy may also enjoy a bowl of sodium-free broth. Just keep in mind that many popular foods are toxic to cats. Never give your kitty chocolate; garlic, onions, scallions, and chives; pitted fruits; avocados; grapes, currants, or raisins; meat on the bone; raw meat, dough, or yeast; or anything that contains xylitol. Ask your vet for more information.

Guests

Some cats are very friendly and outgoing, and will spend the day hopping from lap to lap. Others will just sleep through the festivities. Some kitties, however, are very shy, and will bolt for their favorite hiding spots as soon as the doorbell rings. If your pet falls into the latter category, set her up in a quiet back room with food, toys, treats, and bedding, and let her spend the day napping. If your cat struggles with anxiety or fear around guests, our ‘Behavioral Counseling’ services may help improve her comfort and confidence.

Fur

We recommend vacuuming thoroughly before your guests arrive. You may also want to change your air filters. To get Fluffy’s fur off your furniture and upholstery, try using a rubber squeegee, a rubber dish glove, or a damp sponge.

Hazards

Never underestimate Fluffy’s ability to get herself into trouble! Candles are one concern here. It’s much too easy for a cat to knock one over, or stick her tail in a flame! Keep candles and potpourri burners in high spots that your pet can’t reach. Decorative items, like wreaths and garlands, can also be dangerous. Cats can also dash out an open door, or accidentally get stepped on. Keep a close eye on your kitty, especially as people are coming or going. Our Advice on Thanksgiving With Fluffy in 2024

What are some specific Thanksgiving-themed cat toys or activities that can keep cats entertained during the holiday?

To keep cats entertained during Thanksgiving, consider themed toys such as turkey or pumpkin-shaped plushies filled with catnip, which are both festive and engaging. Interactive puzzle feeders that dispense treats can provide mental stimulation while also mimicking the hunt for food, keeping your cat occupied during meal times. Additionally, setting up a feather wand play session can help mimic the natural bird-catching instincts of cats, providing both physical exercise and entertainment. These activities not only entertain your cat but also integrate them safely into the holiday festivities.

How can cat owners incorporate their pets into Thanksgiving traditions or festivities without compromising the cat’s safety or comfort?

Cat owners can safely include their pets in Thanksgiving festivities by offering cat-safe treats like plain cooked turkey or sodium-free broth, which lets them enjoy the holiday meal without health risks. For sociable cats, allowing them to join the gathering can provide stimulation, but it’s important to provide a quiet retreat for less outgoing pets. This space should include essentials like water, toys, and a comfortable bed. Ensuring the environment is secure, such as keeping candles out of reach and watching for open doors, will also help prevent accidents and keep your cat safe during the celebrations.

What are some common Thanksgiving decorations that may be toxic to cats if ingested?

Common Thanksgiving decorations that may be toxic to cats if ingested include autumnal plants like chrysanthemums and certain lilies, which are often part of floral arrangements. These can cause gastrointestinal upset or more severe health issues. Also, decorations like garlands or wreaths may contain small parts or wires that pose choking hazards or can cause internal blockages if swallowed. Additionally, decorative items made with essential oils or potpourri, often pumpkin-spiced, can be toxic if a curious cat licks or chews them. Always keep such decorations out of reach to ensure your cat’s safety.

What are some tips for traveling with cats during the Thanksgiving holiday?

When traveling with cats during Thanksgiving, it’s crucial to ensure their comfort and safety. Use a secure, well-ventilated carrier and familiarize your cat with it before the trip. Provide access to water and a comfortable blanket or bedding that smells like home to ease stress. Plan for regular breaks if driving long distances to allow your cat to use the litter box and hydrate. Avoid feeding your cat right before traveling to prevent motion sickness. Always keep your cat in the carrier while the vehicle is moving to prevent injury and escape.

How can cat owners involve their pets in the spirit of gratitude and appreciation that is central to Thanksgiving?

Cat owners can involve their pets in the spirit of Thanksgiving by showing extra appreciation through dedicated time and attention. Engaging in their favorite activities, such as play sessions with a favorite toy or cozy cuddle time, can express gratitude. Providing special treats like a small portion of plain cooked turkey or a new toy can also make the day special for them. Additionally, creating a peaceful environment during festivities shows thoughtful care and appreciation for their comfort and well-being, embodying the holiday’s spirit of thankfulness.
