Today, August 1st, is Yorkie Day! These adorable and charming little dogs have big personalities and even bigger hearts, and they’ve scored plenty of devoted fans. Fido definitely packs a lot of personality into a small body! Here, a Roanoke, VA vet lists some things you learn when you adopt a Yorkie.
Yorkies Are Hunters
Yorkies were originally bred to hunt small animals. While Fido is mostly ‘working’ as a companion dog these days, he still retains some of those killer instincts. He just tends to take them out on toys. Be sure to play with your furry buddy daily!
They Make Great Doorbells …
One great thing about our canine companions? They always let us know when there’s somebody at the door. Your little buddy may be the most adorable doorbell ever!
… But Horrible Guard Dogs
Fido may be great at letting you know there’s someone at the door, but he isn’t going to make a very formidable guard dog. Not only is he too small to pose much of a threat, he also is sure that everyone on the planet is his bff!
They Are Opinionated
Yorkies are often lumped into the less-than-official category of ‘yapper dogs’, and not without reason. Fido is quite vocal! Your pint-sized pal may not be shy about expressing himself. If you want a quiet pup, you may want to opt for a different breed.
They Need Lots Of Grooming
One of Fido’s best features is his pretty, silky fur. Yorkie coats are more like human hair than that of most dogs. However, you’ll need to be pretty diligent about keeping up with your canine friend’s beauty rituals. Otherwise, your furry best friend could get mats and tangles. Ask your vet for grooming advice.
They’re Great For Apartment Dwellers
Fido is really a bit of sunshine stuffed into a tiny, adorable package. (Emphasis on the tiny: the smallest dog on record was a Yorkie named Sylvia, who was only 2.5 inches tall!) That makes them a great fit for anyone who doesn’t have much space.
They’re Adorable
Yorkies have super charming faces, and tend to look a lot like little teddy bears. We probably don’t even have to tell you how cute they are as puppies!
