Caring For A Diabetic Pet

November 2, 2021

It’s National Pet Diabetes Month! Has your canine pal been diagnosed with diabetes? Diabetes isn’t uncommon in pets. Most dogs that have diabetes have Type 1 diabetes, which means that their bodies don’t produce the insulin they need to process glucose, so that it fuels their cells. Diabetic pups can still lead full, happy lives, and they have plenty of love and tail wags to offer. Fido may just need some extra TLC. A Salem, VA vet discusses caring for a diabetic dog below.

Insulin Injections

Daily injections can be an extremely effective way to manage doggy diabetes. Your vet will give you specific instructions on how and when to do this. We know, it may sound intimidating. However, once you know what you’re doing, it will only take a minute. Don’t forget to give Fido a (healthy) treat and some attention after!

Diet

We can’t overstate how important it is for Fido to have a healthy diet. Your vet may recommend giving him low-fat food and treats, and perhaps adding some healthy veggies, like spinach or broccoli. Your canine companion may need to eat food made specifically for diabetic dogs. Portion control is also very important. Even overfeeding your furry best friend by just a little bit can cause him to gain weight. Ask your vet for specific advice.

Exercise

Keeping Fido at a healthy weight is very important! Exercise isn’t only beneficial for weight control, though: it also helps regulate your canine friend’s blood sugar. Just stick with safe, suitable exercises.

Get The Household On Board

Make sure that everyone in your household is on the same page with your pup’s care, especially his diet. (That means all of you have to steel yourself against Fido’s furry face and doggy theatrics.)

Do Some Research

It’s important for you to know what to expect as time goes by, and how to recognize signs of trouble. Do plenty of research, and learn about the signs of high or low blood sugar.

Consult The Vet

At the end of the day, Fido’s doctor is going to be your best resource for information on how to care for your furry buddy. Keep up with the recommended appointment schedule, and don’t be afraid to ask questions. That’s why we’re here!
