Earth Day With Fido

April 15, 2023

Earth Day is April 22nd this year. As natural disasters and climate issues become more and more commonplace, Earth Day has become an important reminder of the importance of protecting and preserving our planet. Fido would be more than happy to pitch in! A Roanoke, VA vet suggests some ways to reduce your canine buddy’s carbon pawprint below.

Reduce Waste

Reducing waste is a great way to help conserve valuable resources. Use microfiber cloths or rags to clean up after your pooch, and dump his water bowl into a plant. Many typical household items can be repurposed into doggy products. A hard-shell suitcase can make a cute bed for a little dog, while a tee-shirt can be turned into a rope toy. Look online for ideas and instructions. You may also be able to donate some of your pup’s unused things to local shelters or rescues.

Buy In Bulk

Buying things in bulk can save both money and resources. However, there is a sweet spot here. You don’t want to buy so much kibble that it spoils before your furry pal can eat it!

Shop Wisely

When buying products for Fido, choose eco-friendly products that use sustainable resources. For instance, opt for bamboo bowls instead of plastic ones. Your canine friend also won’t mind getting eco-friendly toys made from things like wool, felt, or rope. This applies to cleaning products as well. Choose brands that use sustainable resources.

Veterinary Care

Simply keeping up with Fido’s basic care needs will also benefit the environment. It’s much easier to protect your furry bff from diseases and parasites than it is to treat him for them. Those treatments also require more resources, such as gasoline, electricity, medicine, and medical supplies. Spay/neuter surgery is important as well. Pet overpopulation is a huge problem, and is also a drain on our resources.

Pick Up After The Pooch

Dog feces is a major source of water contamination. Always pick up after your four-legged friend! If you want to go a step further, opt for biodegradable waste baggies.

Take A Walk

There may be no better way to celebrate Earth Day than by taking your canine companion for a walk in a pretty park. Spending time in nature is good for all of us!
