Prevent A Litter Month

February 1, 2022

Has your pet been fixed yet? If not, we strongly recommend that you make this appointment right away. Given that February is both Beat The Heat Month and Prevent A Litter Month, this is the perfect time to discuss spay/neuter surgery, and why it’s so important. Read on as a local Salem, VA veterinarian delves into this topic.

Why Fixing Pets Is So Important

As you probably know, the biggest reason to get your little (or not so little) buddy fixed is to help combat pet overpopulation. The Humane Society of the United States estimates that there are as many as 70 million homeless dogs and cats in the US, and over 6 million admitted to shelters annually. Given that two cats can have as many as 11,606,077 descendants in 9 years, and dogs can have 67,000 in 6 years, this is clearly an area where every little bit of effort helps. It’s also important to think of the welfare of your pet’s babies, and their descendants. You may find great homes for one litter, but there’s no way to really ensure that their kittens and puppies won’t end up homeless.

Additional Benefits

Getting Fluffy and Fido fixed will also be beneficial for you both. Your pet will be healthier and calmer after, and less likely to try and run off in search of love. Pets that have been fixed are also less likely to engage in problematic behavior, such as spraying or trying to dig an escape tunnel under the fence. People with cats will also be spared the torture of having to listen to their pets amorous love songs. (Fluffy may be cute, but she’s a horrible singer.)

Helping Your Pet Recuperate

Spay/neuter procedures are very routine, and complications are rare. However, Fido and Fluffy will need some extra TLC as they recover. Make sure they have a clean, comfy bed to recuperate in. Your furry pal may need to wear an Elizabethan collar or an inflatable. (You can fully expect your pet to give you an accusing look, but don’t give in: it’s for their own good.) Aside from that, just be sure to follow your vet’s instructions to the letter.
